Aperture, Shutter speed, ISO - how do they all work?

Aperture:
1. What part of the body should we closely relate aperture? The part of the body we should closely relate aperture with is our pupil
2. Finish this sentence - the smaller the Aperture ____the larger F-stop_________, the higher the Aperture _The larger the F-stop_______________.3. In your own words tell me how aperture impacts Depth of Field? aperture impacts depth of field by making the main subject sharp and the background blurry during a large f-stop and  the opposite  during a small f-stop.
4. With the camera near you - tell me the F stops available on the lens currently attached

Photo taken with aperture setting F2.8

Photo taken with aperture setting F16 or higher

Shutter speed:

example of a photo taking with high Shutter speed
example of a photo taking at slow shutter speed:

1. If you were assigned to shoot at Blue and Gold night, which will be next month, what shutter speeds do you think you would have to shoot at the following events that night I would like you to answer the question for the following two situations:

At the beginning while the sun is still partially up and the courtyard has reasonable light
a.) the dunking booth
b.) the food eating contest
c.) the rock climbing walld.) someone working at a booth
e.) the DJ/MC working at the middle of the circle
f.) the Diamonds performance.

Towards the end when there is no sun and has gotten dark enough that you can't see from one end of the courtyard to the other.a.) the dunking booth
b.) the food eating contest
c.) the rock climbing wall
d.) someone working at a booth
e.) the DJ/MC working at the middle of the circlef.) the Diamonds performance.

2. List the three settings your camera has regarding setting shutter speed (these are found at #5 on the Shutter Speed website. Explain how each works - DO NOT COPY AND PASTE, use your own words.
One of the three settings regarding setting shutter speed is aperture priority witch is an automatic way for your camera to set the shutter speed for you however you set the aperture. An other setting is Shutter priority were the aperture is set for you and your shutter speed is set by you. The final of the three settings you camera has regarding setting shutter speed is manual  were the aperture and shutter speed are set by you and not automatic by the camera
3. With the camera near you, what are the shutter speeds available to you on that camera? You will have to turn the camera on to determine this - hopefully you can figure out what setting to put the camera on to determine the answer to this question.

ISO

Photo taken at ISO 200

photo taken at ISO 3200 or 6400
1. What are the advantages of shoot at a higher ISO at a sporting event like basketball or a night football game? The advantages of shooting at a higher ISO at a sporting event or at night is because there is not enough light and at a higher ISO you can capture a motion with low light.
2. What suggestions did the author make about using a low ISO?  The author suggested that you use low ISO during good sources of light.
3. What suggestions did the author make about using a high ISO? The author suggested that when there is not a good source of light or a motion is being observed it is best to use high ISO.
4. At the camera near you, please tell me what ISO's are available on your camera?

Sim cam:
F2.8- looks the best at 1/125th of a second shutter speed.
F4-looks the best at 1/60th of a second shutter speed.
F5.6-looks best at 1/60th of a second shutter speed.
F8-looks the best at 1/30th of a second shutter speed.
F11-looks the best at 1/30th of a second shutter speed.
F16-looks the best at 1/15th of a second shutter speed.
F22-looks the best at 1/8th of a second shutter speed.

F2.8 the background is not visible , it is blurry and all that is visible is the couple.
F4 The background is still not visible, it is blurry and all that is visible is the couple.
F5.6 the background is still blurry but slightly visible.
F8 the background is still blurry.
F11the background is slightly more visible.
F16 the background is visible.
F22 the background is completely visible and the couple is still clear.
The couple are beginning to become more blurry in a higher Fstop were the background is visible.  the photographer can keep the shutter speed high to expose the light to the couple more. the lowest shutter speed the photographer can keep the camera in is 1/15th of a second shutter speed.

Camera Sim:
I did good on the depth field and better on the shutter speed and motion. Yes this did make me understand Aperture, Shutter speed, and ISO clearer.

Reactions to Africa:black_an_white

This power point had some of the greatest photos I have seen. The photos are very detailed and focused on the animals. The photographer also followes the rules of photography very closely giving his photos a very dedicatied look.
This is my favorite photo from Nick Brandt because it shows the lion as the main subject and is framed by the trees calling main attention to the lion..

Academic Shoot reflection

1. What challenges did you encounter while trying to get the photos following the rules I set out for you? Some of the challenges I encountered wile trying to get the photos is that I got multiple rules in one photo.

2. What technical aspects of photography or the assignment in general (focus, framing, holding the camera, etc.) did you find yourself thinking about the most? Provide a specific example of what you did to do this correctly. The technical aspects of photography I found my self thinking of the most is getting a clear non blurry photo. what I did to do this correctly is I made sure to get my image balanced and focused.

3. If you could do the assignment again, what would you do differently now that you know some basic rules of photography?
If I could do the assignment again I would make sure my subject was clear.
4. What things would you do the same? The things I would do the same is keep taking clear photos.

5. When you go out with your next set of prompts, which rule do you think will be the easiest to achieve? The rule that I would have the easiest time with is simplicity.

6. Which rule do you think will be the hardest to capture? The rule that would be the most difficult to capture would be frame.

7. What rule are you still not totally clear on and what can you do to figure out what that rule is? The rule that I am not totally clear on is balance and what I can do to figure out what this is, is go back to the rules and examples.

Simplicity
How well did you follow the rule? The rule was not followed correctly because there are people cut off creating a merger and is not showing complete simplicity on the subject.
What is the subject (be very very specific)? The subject is the student working in the bottom right corner
Is it clear to people looking at your photos what the subject is? The subject is not the clearest due to the other people caught in the photo that serve a distraction
If you didn't follow the rule well, what could you have done differently?what I could have done differently is focus more on my main subject and single it out because the other subjects cause a distraction to the main subject.

Balance

How well did you follow the rule? The rule was not fallowed correctly because the second row of computers seems cut of like if the rest of the row was cut off.
What is the subject (be very very specific)? The subject is the 2nd row of computers
Is it clear to people looking at your photos what the subject is? Yes the subject is clear to the viewer.
If you didn't follow the rule well, what could you have done differently? What I could have done to improve this photo is concentrate on the subject witch is the 2nd row only.

Rule of Thirds
How well did you follow the rule? The rule was followed pretty well because it shows were the person walking is going to and and not were he has been.
What is the subject (be very very specific)? The subject is the person walking.
Is it clear to people looking at your photos what the subject is? The subject is clear to the viewer that it is the person walking.
If you didn't follow the rule well, what could you have done differently?  The rule could have been followed a bit closer as to showing the full person and more environment.

Framing

How well did you follow the rule? The rule was followed well.
What is the subject (be very very specific)? The subject is the person with the back pack being framed by the arched walls.
Is it clear to people looking at your photos what the subject is? Yes the viewer can tell what the subject is.
If you didn't follow the rule well, what could you have done differently?Something that could have made the photo better is that the person with the back pack could have been more clear and closer to the frame.

Lines

How well did you follow the rule? The rule was followed well
What is the subject (be very very specific)?  The subject is the orchestra students with there bows in the air or close to there person witch call attention to them because it runs down to them especially the boy with the blue shirt that says 21, the bow he is holding up leads attention to him.
Is it clear to people looking at your photos what the subject is? No the subject could be confusing to the viewer because the subjects were not singled out and concentrated.
If you didn't follow the rule well, what could you have done differently?Something that can make this photo follow the rule of lines is that the subjects can be concentrated more.

Merger

How well did you follow the rule? The rule was followed well because people in the photo were cut off.
What is the subject (be very very specific)? The subject is the people who are cut off in the bottom left corner.
Is it clear to people looking at your photos what the subject is? Yes the subject is clear to the viewer that the people in the bottom left corner are cut off.
If you didn't follow the rule well, what could you have done differently?A thing that could have made this photo better is acutely avoiding the merger as in making sure to include all the people in the photo before I capture the photo.

Best story:This photo tells a story, a story of very kind hearted teens feeding the cold, and hungry people.

Action and Emotion:This photo shows a great amount of action and emotion due to that all the students are participation in the the action of the activity and are very excited and having a good time.

Fills the frame: The main thing that makes the photo interesting is that the viewer of the photo can not really tell what they are working on in the photo however even though you cant see there face their body posture shows that they are serious of there work and makes it a very interesting photo giving it mystery. The way the people in the photo are framed is by the dark background forcing the viewers attention on the main subject.

Great white and black photographers part 2

Lewis Hine was born in September 26, 1874 in Oshkosh, Wisconsin. Hine was American sociologist and photographer. In the early point of Hine's life his father past away in an accident motivating Hine to begin working to save up money for a college education. Hine studied sociology at the university of Chicago, Columbia, and New York. Furthermore Hine became a teacher in New York city at the Ethical culture school encouraging many students to study photography. By seeing how Photography motivated Hine began to make photography his career. In 1908 he became the photographer for the National child labor committee NCLC. Over the decade he documented the NCLC's efforts to end this very sad time. During and after world war II he documented the red cross. In 1930 he was hired to document the construction of the Empire state building in New York city. In order to get the best photographs he endured the same dangers the workers did 1000 feet above 5th avenue!. During the Great Deppression he worked with the Red Cross to document the the drought in Americas economy. Lewis Hine's photographs are some of the most known photograps of the era however Lewis Hine at the time died unappreciated manny people were not interested in his work past or present and he lost his house and applied for wellfare. Sadley Lewis Hine died at the age of 66 on November 3, 1940 at Dobbs Farry Hospital in Dobbs Farry New York after an opperation. His son Corydon donated His prints and negatives to the photo leage witch was dissmanted in 1951. After the dissmatel of The Photo Leage, the prints were offerd the the musseam of moddern art howerver they did not except them, fourtunateley the Gorge Eastman House in Rochester New York and his Photo's been some of the best known of that era giving insite in many immportant and historical events.

Post shoot reflection

1. What challenges did you encounter while trying to get the photos of your first 3 prompts (Red, Metal, Grumpy?  The challenges I encountered while taking photos of my 3 prompts Red, Metal, Grumpy is that many of the photos I captured were an example of multipal details of the prompts in the same photo so it made it difficult to dicide what prompt the photo resembaled.

2. What technical aspects of photography or the assignment in general (focus, framing, holding the camera, etc.) did you find yourself thinking about the most? Provide a specific example of what you did to do this correctly. I foud my self thinking of focusing my photos a good amount of the time due to the fact that my partner and I were outside most of the time and the sun light was affecting the balance light in the photo and an other reason is that I photographed many objects and people from a far distance so I had to constantly focus the camera to make the photo clear.

3. If you could do the assignment again, what would you do differently now that you know some basic rules of photography? If I could do the assignment again I would use the rules such as avoiding mergers to make sure that the viewers of my photo's know what the main object of my photo is.

4. What things would you do the same? A thing I would do the same is that I would continue avoiding mergers and giving the viewer the full exposer of the photo and noting that would distract the viewer of the main point of the photo.

5. Finally - go back and edit your blogs with the 3 photos (red, metal, grumpy), tell me what rules of composition (which you just learned about) did you end up actually achieving? Did you have any?  Yes I did accomplish achieving rules in my photos. I accomplished Framing, rule of thirds slimpicity.                                                                                                                                                                                                                           6. Are you interested in shooting those prompts again, why? Yes I am interested in shooting those promps agiain because now that I am aware of the rules I can take more accurate photos.

Balance:this photo is a perfact example of balance do to the fact that it balences out on both sides of the photo by giving a view of the police officers and the building, and other objects in the street
Framing:This photo gives the viewer a feeling of being in the photo giving that first person view is a good example of the technique framing, witch gives the full dynamics of the photo.
Lines:This photo shows many lines in many differant dirctions making the people working stand out of the lines, in other words the lines call attention to the workers.
Rule of Thirds:This photo is a perfect example of Rule of Thirds because the man has more character by being in a bigger scenery to walk through giving the photo more mystery and curiosity to what he will do next.
slimpicity:this photo shows the Importance of slimpicity because is shows that it is immportant to single out the main object or person being photographed because the the viewer  may get confused to what the main point of the photo is because the green truck is in the way so it can be mistaken as the object, or the workes, or the trees. However the main object is the fallen towers if the photo was not tilted the viewer could not be able to tell what the phot is about.
Meger:this photograph is a perfect example of a merger due to the people who are cut out of the picture and the limited clearity of the photo.

Thursday, September 8, 2011

Metal:
This photo exaggerates the rule of slimpicity due to the fact I singled out the motorcycle and the viewer of the photo will pay more attention to the motorcycle than anything in else in the photo.

Red:
The photo makes the rule framing stand out by the parking lines frame the car.

Grumpy:
this photo shows the view of thirds by giving the person in the photo the room to move in the photo or in this case gaze towards the rest of the parking lot.
